A leading expert on the affluent reveals the real way to build wealth

With well over two million of his books sold, and huge praise from many media outlets, Dr. Thomas J. Stanley is a recognized and highly respected authority on the wealthy, their behavior, and their thinking. Now, in Stop Acting Rich, he details how the less affluent have fallen into the elite luxury brand trap that keeps them from truly acquiring wealth and details how to get out of it by emulating the working rich as opposed to the super elite.

A defensive strategy for tough times, Stop Acting Rich will show you how to live like Warren Buffett-a rich, happy life-through accumulating more wealth and using it to achieve the type of financial freedom that will create true happiness and fulfillment.

  • Puts wealth in perspective and shows you how to live rich without spending more
  • Details why we spend lavishly and how to stop this destructive cycle
  • Discusses how being "rich" means more than just big houses and luxury cars
  • Other titles by Stanley: The Millionaire Mind and The Millionaire Next Door

It's time to understand why we buy what we buy, so that we can start accumulating, rather than depleting, wealth. Stop Acting Rich shows you exactly what it takes to achieve this elusive goal.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Huge Dr. Stanley Fan But Disappointed With This One  Dec 27, 2009
I love Dr. Stanley's books and have read the Millionaire Next Door and Millionaire Mind probably 20 times. And I was very excited to discover he published another book to compliment the series. However, Stop Acting Rich is simply a rehash of his previous books. I did not find any new revelations in terms of insights and messages that have not been already discussed in his prior publications. It is disappointing.

Also, he comes across as irresponsible when characterizing people who own perceived luxury items, which is too bad because I normally enjoy the anecdotes. For example (and admittedly, this one hit home a little), a whole chapter is devoted to portraying people who own wine as reckless and starved for affirmation. He clearly has never spent any time understanding the wine community based on the outlandish examples he uses. His case studies do not take into consideration wine lovers who apply the frugal principles when making acquisitions of collectible wines. Our personal collection of trophy wines has appreciated over 25% per year for the past 10 years, which is significantly higher than what the stock market has yielded over the same period. And just like anyone who is passionate about a hobby (e.g., gardening, sports, reading) and enjoys discussing with others, it shouldn't insinuate there are deep seeded childhood insecurities because people just happen to like and appreciate nice wine. Unfortunately, he applies this misguided approach in Chapters 3 through 7.

I understand the point Dr. Stanley is attempting to make about those living above their means, but the repetitive nature of Stop Acting Rich and the reaching examples made it hard to finish. It feels like the material covered in the 200+ page book could have been written in about 30 pages.

If you missed his other books, this one will catch you up, othewise skip it  Dec 25, 2009
This book is more a compilation of the author's previous works than it is a new effort. If you missed his other books, this one is for you. If you've read one or more of this other books, only buy this one to give to someone else. The book is, though, a continuing revalation of common sense and conservative living. The kind of thing your grandparents did, and the kind of thing many Americans do, though they don't get on reality shows for doing so.

I used several of the stories in the book as examples for my kids of the dangers of our materialistic, style, and consumption based world. The book doesn't just say, "Live Cheap." It points out that value is just as important as cost. And it points out that many, many people are living beyond their means.

Good lessons, but the book feels like it is a rehash of his previous works and seems to have been written to capitalize on the recent economic problems - which were at least in part caused by a lot of people living beyond their means; acting rich.

Not Dr. Stanley's Best Work  Dec 21, 2009
I found Stop Acting Rich to be repetitive and often tedious, and an overall disappointment. If you have already read The Millionaire Next Door then there is little reason to purchase this book. The message is the same, but the names of his subjects have become annoyingly childish such as Anna After, Barbara Before, Mr. Multipliski, and Author Grapes. This may sound like I am nit picking the work, but I found these names to be ridiculous and difficult to take seriously.

I do agree with Stanley's underlying message that most American's will sadly spend their lives trying to keep up with the Joneses, and never really get ahead. "More than $70 trillion in realizes or reported income was generated by US households between 1997 and 2006, yet only 3.5% of these households were in the millionaire category". I also believe frugality is an important tool for anyone who wishes to achieve financial freedom. However, I find some of Stanley's statistics very difficult to believe, and question their accuracy. I think that many of the statistics used in this book came from his originally research prior to the 1996 release of the millionaire next door. He does suggest that he has conducted more recent survey's to confirm his original findings, but many of the numbers feel more accurate in the early 1990's than in 2009. I also question Stanley's biases in interpreting the results as well.

I believe in a balanced lifestyle, which includes living below your means. However, extreme frugality and an obsessive focus on achieving financial success can be equally as damaging to ones life as is hyper consumption. Stanley's choice to portray Joe DiMaggio as a financial icon, who found happiness without having to spend on consumer goods was a poor choice. Joe DiMaggio actually lived a very sad life filled with few friends and little family. He was more focused on money than he was family and friends. His only son was a homeless wanderer who Joe was estranged from. The fact that Joe DiMaggio managed to save 45 million dollars is irrelevant. This is an example of how Stanly often twists the facts in order to reinforce his beliefs. Stop Acting Rich is certainly not Dr. Thomas Stanley's best work. I would only recommend this book, if you are a die-hard Stanley fan looking for further analysis into the millionaire lifestyle originally portrayed in The Millionaire Next Door.

The most powerful book since the Millionaire Mind by the author of it  Dec 8, 2009
The Millionaire Mind and The Millionaire Next Door were powerful works on genuine high finance, sure. But this work really breaks it down to where it is all at and I don't just mean "wall street level" or even "street level", it genuinely embraces the individual over society's "keeping up with the jones's" mentality. So, I would like to say here, thank you Thomas Stanley for another genuinely helpful work that breaks it all down financially in a genuine sense honestly and honestly individually. Indeed, this is a short review, but in a nutshell, this is the most important finance book the "average person" will ever read.

Timeless advice  Dec 7, 2009
I have read and enjoyed a few of the Stanley books. This one is as good as all his others. Reading books like this will help keep you from falling into the consumptive lifestyle. My wife and I own a small business that I started. We have a net worth of about $4 million, of which about $2 million is in cash and stocks. We have no debt. We give 10% to charity each year. I grew up on welfare, my wife not much better. We live below our means, drive Honda cars and have a $500k house in a MN suburb. We have maybe 20 years or so before retirement. I worked 100 hour weeks for years on end. I'm in no way trying to brag or be arrogant. If you can live below your means, save religiously, not succumb to our consumer oriented society, and give to charity, I think you have a recipe to easily be a millionaire someday. I'd like to retire with $10 million. If I don't make it, that's ok because I'm already so far away from those 18 years of welfare that I know I'll never be back there---ever.
